Teeling Small Batch

DRAM1 Panel Members Teeling Small Batch Review

This review of the Teeling Small Batch is inspired by the combined tasting notes of the panel members of the Dram1.com Awards. Instead of relying on a single palate, this write-up reflects the impressions, opinions, strengths and weaknesses identified by dozens of experienced and beginner tasters alike.

I happened to write a review of this very whisky quite some time ago here on the blog, be sure to check out the Teeling Small Batch review based on my own tasting notes as well, and check them out side by side! Keep in mind that my writing style was a bit rusty back then though 😉

Teeling Distillery, located in the heart of Dublin, has revived a long-sleeping tradition of Irish whiskey making. Known for their innovative cask finishes and accessible flavor profiles, Teeling positions its Small Batch as an everyday dram: approachable, smooth, and bottled at a respectable 46% ABV. Matured in ex-bourbon casks and finished in rum barrels, it aims to offer sweetness, warmth, and easy drinkability. Let’s review this Teeling Small Batch!

Tasting Notes Teeling Small Batch

Stats

Distillery: Teeling

Region: Ireland

Whisky Type: Irish Blended Whiskey

Strength: 46% ABV (80 Proof)

Nose

The nose opens with vanilla cream, honey sweetness and soft caramel, giving an immediate sense of approachability. Several panel members noted melon, stone fruit and light citrus, while others detected floral touches and a faint herbal edge.

A few tasters described hints of bubblegum, scented soap and jelly beans, likely tied to youthful grain components. Occasional impressions of grass, grain or a mild metallic/aluminium note showed up as well. Despite these quirks, the nose remains generally soft, sweet and mild, without intensity or deep complexity.

Palate

The palate is soft, smooth and lightly creamy, led by vanilla, honey and gentle fruit notes. The rum cask influence adds a touch of butterscotch, shortbread and sweetness, though the whisky keeps a noticeably thin body.

Fruit carries through—apple, melon, soft citrus—but never becomes bold. Light oak bitterness, a prickle of alcohol, and a hint of graininess appear mid-palate. Many panelists described it as “easy drinking but simple”, and several noted that it could come across as young and slightly sharp at times.

Overall, the palate is pleasant but modest: accessible, sweet and uncomplicated.

Finish

The finish is short to medium, fading quickly into light oak, vanilla sweetness and a soft bitterness. Some detected pepper, citrus, or floral touches. Nothing lingers for long — the finish withdraws cleanly but abruptly.

Food Pairing

Because of its light, sweet, vanilla-forward profile, Teeling Small Batch pairs well with:

  • Shortbread cookies
  • Vanilla cheesecake
  • Apple pie
  • Soft cheeses (brie, camembert)
  • Honey-glazed ham
  • Light chocolate desserts

Its gentle character works best with sweet, creamy, or delicate flavors rather than strong or spicy foods.

Final Thoughts

Teeling Small Batch is exactly what the panel’s collective notes suggest: a light, sweet, comfortable Irish whiskey that shines in approachability rather than complexity. It works beautifully as an everyday dram, especially for newcomers or fans of gentle, vanilla-forward profiles.

It won’t satisfy those looking for layered flavors, heavy cask influence or long finishes — but that’s not the promise it makes. Within its category and price point, it performs honestly and reliably.

The Teeling Small Batch is a friendly, easygoing Irish whiskey that does its job well. Perfect for relaxed evenings, whisky beginners, and moments when simplicity is all you want in your glass.
