Sakurao Islay Cask Finish Review: A spectacular fusion of Japanese Craftmanship and Scottish Heritage

This release, though, stands firmly in its own lane. The Sakurao Islay Cask Finish isn’t just another limited edition—it’s the very first Sakurao Single Cask bottled for the Benelux, personally selected by the Dutch importer Craft Spirits. A young Japanese whisky, finished in ex-Laphroaig casks, combining Hiroshima character with unmistakable Islay smoke. That alone makes it intriguing. The story behind it makes it even better.
The Story Behind the Bottle
In April 2025, Riley and Esmee of Craft Spirits—the Dutch importer responsible for bringing this bottle to the Benelux—travelled to Japan. After time spent in Tokyo and Kyoto, they arrived in Hiroshima, where Sakurao Distillery has been based since 1918.
Sakurao’s whisky journey began in 1920 with its first nine batches, but like many distilleries, it paused production during the economic downturn of the 1970s. When the distillery eventually resumed whisky-making, it did so with a renewed focus and a clear identity.
Today, Sakurao ferments for around 60 hours and distils to approximately 80% ABV. A carefully guarded mix of husk, grits, and flour is used to produce a slightly sweeter wort, designed to highlight the distillery’s distinctive new make character.
Maturation in southern Japan plays a huge role. The warmer climate accelerates interaction between spirit and wood, leading to deeper extraction in a shorter time. Angel’s share losses can climb as high as 7% per year—remarkably high compared to Scotland—resulting in whiskies that show surprising maturity at a young age.
During their visit, Riley and Esmee were presented with six different casks. One stood out immediately. This particular cask, later bottled exclusively for the Netherlands, had been finished in ex-Laphroaig barrels. That means a distinctly Japanese spirit layered with classic Islay peat—smoke, iodine, brine—without losing its original identity.
What Makes This Whisky Stand Out
This is a true fusion dram. Sakurao’s bright, citrus-driven spirit meets the heavy, medicinal peat influence of Laphroaig casks, creating a whisky that walks a fine line between two worlds.
It’s also a milestone release. As the first Sakurao single cask for the Benelux, selected by Craft Spirits themselves, the Sakurao Islay Cask carries both rarity and intent. And despite being just four years old, it already delivers a depth and intensity that speaks volumes about both the distillery and the cask.
On a personal note, this bottle also found its way into a Japanese Whisky Tasting I hosted at Whisky Club Utrecht—an honour, and an absolute blast. It stood out immediately, sparking conversation and curiosity around the table, exactly the kind of whisky you want in that setting.
Tasting Notes: Sakurao Islay Cask Finish
Stats
- Age: 4 Years
- ABV: 55%
- Distillery: Sakurao
- Region: Hiroshima, Japan
- Flavour Profile: Smoke & Storm
- Chill-Filtration: No
- Colouring: No
Nose
A vibrant burst of citrus leads—yuzu, finger lime, and kumquat—fresh, zesty, and slightly exotic. Beneath that, a firm layer of liquorice root adds earthy depth. Then comes the smoke: subtle at first, but unmistakably Islay in character, bringing notes of iodine, brine, and charred wood. Gentle spices like cardamom and nutmeg round it out.
Palate
The arrival is bold and layered. Liquorice root takes centre stage again, almost tea-like, followed by rich molasses and brown sugar sweetness. The peat influence becomes more pronounced here—salty, smoky, and slightly medicinal—melding with savoury notes reminiscent of maple-glazed bacon or honeyed ham from the barbecue. Hints of iodine and treacle add further complexity.
Finish
Long, evolving, and slightly untamed. The liquorice gradually softens, giving way to cured meats, sea spray, and lingering smoke. It’s a finish that keeps shifting, holding your attention right to the end.
Food Pairing
This whisky thrives alongside bold, savoury dishes. A perfectly grilled medium-rare steak, charred picanha, or slow-cooked beef cheek all match beautifully. For something different, a strong blue cheese or a piece of very dark chocolate offers a rewarding contrast.
Who This Whisky Is For
This is for the adventurous drinker. If you’re into Islay whisky but curious about how peat interacts with a completely different spirit style, this Sakurao Islay Cask Finish delivers in spades. It’s also one for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate the rarity and story behind a single cask Japanese release.

Final Thoughts
The Sakurao Islay Cask Finish is not a subtle whisky, nor does it try to be. It’s bold, expressive, and slightly unconventional—exactly what makes it so compelling.
At just four years old, it already showcases what Sakurao is capable of, especially when paired with the right cask and a sharp eye for selection. Add in the story behind it and the role of Craft Spirits in bringing it to the Benelux, and you end up with something that feels genuinely special.
A whisky that sparks conversation, challenges expectations, and lingers long after the glass is empty.
