Review: Thy PX

ABV: 58,3% (116,6 proof)
Type: Single Malt
Cask: PX
Malts: Pale malt, beechwood smoked malt

Rinse apple syrup, fresh dates, dried figs and cranberry marmalade. There’s tons of dark fruit notes to discover here as the influence of the PX shines through very dominantly. Lovely notes to be sure, but the fact that this dram is also partly beechwood smoked like the previous one goes missing a bit because of it.

The palate is also very much PX forward. It’s raining raisins, dates, cranberries and dried figs in my mouth while I sip and savour this dram. There’s some liquorice as well and a slight salmiak note that I seem to find in all the beechwood smoke expressions. And personally I love that!

This Thy PX has by far the longest finish of all the drams in the line-up, which makes it the perfect dram to end the night with. Salmiak, honey, caramel and espresso notes seem to linger forever and the combination of these notes works wonderfully for my palate. I’m savouring this!

As much as I do love the flavours present in this dram, I also found it the least exciting of the Thy whiskies I’ve tasted. The PX does a little bit too much of the heavy lifting for my liking, as it’s the uniqueness of the spirit and the use of beechwood smoke that intruiges me most about Thy. I wouldn’t be surprised if this ends up as one of the most popular and best sold drams though, as it ticks all the boxes for an excellent Single Malt. Personally I’ll be picking up the Bøg or one of the previous two single casks though.
