After reviewing De Verloren Whisky earlier this week, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to also review the single cask version of this amazing blend! For this Single Cask release Dam Dranken matured their blend on Terschelling in a Captain’s Catch Rum Cask. Bottled at a higher ABV of 47% and with that finish on an ex-rum cask this blend promises to pack an even bigger punch than the original De Verloren Whisky.
Since I’ve already went in depth about the story of De Verloren Whisky in my earlier review, let’s dive right into the tasting notes of this Single Cask Edition!
Tasting Notes: De Verloren Whisky – Single Cask
Stats:
ABV: 47% (94 proof)
Age: NAS
Bottled by: Dam Dranken
Chill-filtered: No
Natural Colour: Yes
Nose:
Tropical notes from a whisky that’s been perfected on a not so tropical island? I love it! The nose of this De Verloren Whisky Single Cask is packed to the brim with notes of pineapple, coconut and papaya. But beyond that initial tropical hit there’s also some green apple, luscious vanilla, and spice undertones of nutmeg and kardemom.
Palate:
Rum soaked pineapple slices with brown sugar grilled on a bbq! That’s the first thing that comes to mind but there’s more complexity behind that initial hit. With notes of liquorice, créme brûlée, molasses covered pancakes, and a hint of treacle there’s plenty to explore and love here. While packing a punch flavourwise, the 47% makes this an extremely drinkable whisky!
Finish:
The finish is medium long and the most prominent notes present here are maple syrup, honey and pineapply syrup. There’s some rum soaked raisins to be found here and an ever so slight tannic presence in the form of liquorice root.
Food Pairing:
This goes so well with a Malaga Ice cream, that it’s an instant recommendation to try from my part. Though this would also go well with some mackerel salad on toast or a young gouda for that matter!
Verdict:
Coming in at roughly 40 bucks, it’s hard not to recommend to people who love a good rum cask finished whisky. It brings with it all the tropical notes one might expect, yet it does so at a very affordable price tag. If I were to try this in a blind tasting I think I’d have a hard time discerning this was a blend, and if I think of competitors for affordable rum cask aged whisky’s such as Dewar’s or Glenlivet, I think this De Verloren Whisky sits head and shoulders above the rest. In fact I’d rate it on par with the very popular Balvenie Carribean Cask!
