Aside from the original and sometimes wacky names for their bottles, SMWS never really give any information about the distillery on their bottles. There’s some legal advantages to this strategy for them ofcourse, but over the years it has also become a fun element of the society. In the case of SMWS it is easy to find out which distillery your bottles come from though. Just look at the codes!
How to read the numbers:
On every bottle you’ll find a number, which is seperated by a dot. The number before the dot reperesents the distillery, and the number behind the dot represents the cask. Let’s take 5,12 as an example. This means it’s a bottle from the fifth distillery SMWS ever bottled a whisky from. And the 12th cask they ever bottled from that distillery. With plenty of enthusiastic members, eager to find out where their drams come from, those numbers haven’t been a secret anymore for a long time. You can find them everywhere online and thus you can easily look up which distillery made the liquid in the bottle you’re drinking from.
Since I’m also a member and will most likely be posting several reviews about SMWS bottles, I thought I’d share the distillery codes with you here as well. So you can easily look up which distillery I’m talking about. I will update this list regularly, but if you spot a mistake, or find something missing, please do let me know and I will update it as fast as I can!
